After doing our series of videos on the 3 Rail to 2 Rail conversion for Lionel ALCO S2 switcher locomotives, modelers were interested in our implementation for the non-powered truck under the cab end of the engine on the single truck drive. Consequently, it seemed practical to provision this kit with the parts to make this conversion for model engines not required to be powered by the modeler. To save time and money, the Blunt die cast sideframes are used from the original 3 Rail truck implementation. <\/span><\/p>\n

1935 Electro-motive Corporation (EMC) Switcher, Brass, 600HP All Nation Single Chain Drive Winton 201-A Prime Mover<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

A rare collectible sand cast piece, these are far and few between, representative of the type of modeling back in the day. Consequently, we felt it was well worth the effort to build out a custom power and drive mechanism to make it operational for heavy duty yard work switching. The drive features AAR Type A sprung trucks with pick ups on all wheel sets for 2 rail layouts. The motor is an Amtek-Pittman 30 vdc high torque to a single truck chain drive transmission. The chain tension is also adjustable if tuning it is needed in the future. Included with the model is a bell and hanger set and Allen key for the universal set screws for servicing the mechanism. The model has been maintained as close as possible to its original release.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

There are many older or dated diesel engine models from Weaver in the field on layouts that over time have drives that give trouble or are not operational. Such was the case with a pair of Union Pacific FA-2 A & B units that ran for many years on my Grandfathers layout. The sprockets cracked or were slipping on the drive shafts and of course did not run.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, I started out to 3D print the replacement sprockets in Polycarbonate and fitted them on to the shafts. Well, like any project I tackle, a small job turns into a larger more involved effort, and one thing leads to another.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is often said O Scale takes up too much space. That is true if you are running transcontinental trains with DPUs in the middle and the end of your consist. However, in the era gone by, when equipment such as freight cars were shorter and steam switcher engines of the 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 make up pushed cars around, you can fit a lot of railroad in a small space in O Scale. This steeple cab is proof.<\/span><\/p>\n

The well known AAR Type A truck used on railroad locomotives was patented by Martin P. Blomberg of Hinsdale, Illinois assigned to General Motors Corporation. Working with General Steel Corporation other patents followed. The design was for a railway locomotive truck and of course found on many model railroad layouts under switcher engines. <\/span><\/p>\n

This AAR Type B variant was for road engines and a little research indicates the prototype had GE or Westinghouse traction motors.

Several of my projects involve converting 3 rail engines to 2 rail. Sometimes I start out with just the engine shell body and work from that point forward. One of my engines that I picked up had a missing body part. I needed to create from scratch the radiator shroud and fan assembly located toward the rear of the engine. This was a lot of fun and figuring out the best approach and yet still have a realistic component that matches pretty close to the prototype.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our brass stanchion material profile is designed for MTH engines such as the GP60M for replacement or repair. The brass is cold rolled through a die and is easy to manipulate. <\/span><\/p>\n
