Our good friend Jim Kehrein<\/strong> has once again reminded us why model railroading is equal parts craftsmanship, imagination, and pure joy. He shared three fantastic photos that let us peek into the world he\u2019s been building one detail at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first shot drops us right into East Broad Top\u2019s Rockhill Furnace<\/strong>, captured in miniature with the kind of care that makes you swear you can hear No. 12 simmering just out of frame. The second photo opens the doors to Jim\u2019s beautiful O\u2011scale roundhouse<\/strong>, a structure so full of character you half expect a hostler to step out and wave you inside. And the third image takes us to his EBT Timber Transfer for HID Mt. Union<\/strong>, a building for a scene that will perfectly blend prototype history with modeler\u2019s artistry \u2014 the kind of place where you can almost smell the fresh\u2011cut timber and hear the clank of iron on wood.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re grateful Jim let us enjoy these inspiring glimpses of his layout. It\u2019s always a treat to see what a true craftsman can bring to life. Thanks for sharing, Jim \u2014 keep those trains (and photos) rolling!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The EMD SW1500 was a 1,500 hp diesel-electric switcher locomotive built by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division from 1966 to 1974. Leon Walker took the All Nation Line SW 1500 Switcher In O Scale \u201cunpowered\u201d Kit Shell, combined it with the All Nation EMD Flex-I-Coil 40″ Wheels Kit and you can see the impressive Rock Island Locomotive he is creating. We wrote \u201cunpowered\u201d in quotes, because Leon wanted more than just a dummy engine. He is in the process of finishing all the detailing AND All Nation transmissions to this engine! He will follow it up with the installation of train control electronics.<\/span><\/p>\n

We look forward to seeing this EMD roll down the tracks! More to come for sure. Well done, Leon!<\/span><\/p>\n

…and the rest of the story to go along…”When Ray Dierum – proprietor and master mechanic of the Three Chop Lumber Company – wanted a new speeder for his woods crew he spotted that the Los Angeles Railway was closing its streetcar lines and some of its narrow gauge PCC cars were becoming available. He inspected and reckoned he could regauge the 42 inch trucks to the 3 foot of the TCLC and install a diesel generator in the forward passenger compartment to make it, in effect, a gas-electric similar in principle to the East Broad Top’s M1. In common with Ray’s practice of referring to his railcars as single young ladies, Motor No 1 was named Miss Fitt – a somewhat appropriate name for something which was slightly out of place and a bit tongue in cheek!” <\/span><\/p>\n

In reality, a 1:50 scale Corgi PCC Car, shortened by 3 window bays, and with scratchbuilt power trucks (3D printed with integral double shaft motor below the pivot level).<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n<\/span>Wow, do we have a treat for you! Our new friend Murray Reid shared with us his little railbus! He likes the homebuilt feel of a few backwoods critters. \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 With his permission we post these fantastic models. He said there was no specific prototype for any, but he got inspiration from New Zealand Bush Trams. “They” built all sorts and there was one sawmiller – Olly Smith – who built lots of railtrucks. There is a website if you are curious and that is where he got inspiration from: Ollie Smith Rail Tractors Meandering in the Mamakus.<\/span>In addition, Murray shared another Double ended “switcher”, as you will see in the photos below.<\/span>All of these were “bashed” from 1:43 scale diescast cars\/trucks. The two double enders were two bodies cut and shut. All have scratchbuilt chassis etc.<\/span>And finally he shared his Diesel “hauler”. It started ~life” as a Rich Yoder 50ton GE Standard Gauge Brass RTR. Murray remotored on ON3 trucks, narrowed the mainframe and built new cabs. He finds it easier to start with “something” and then hack it about, rather than completely scratchbuilding. He built a pair of these.<\/span>As he says, All good(harmless)fun!<\/span>Thank you, Murray for sharing your talent with All Nation and now the model railroading community.<\/span>Well done, indeed!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>We are very happy to share with you the wonderful work of Steve Montgomery who specializes in modeling boats and ships. He shares with us his photos of the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen Riverboat that was made in quarter scale. As with all modeling projects, there are challenges and indeed the mechanical action of the paddle wheel required a bit of ingenuity. To our pleasure we were able to supply an additionally long piece of chain with sprockets that we normally use in our chain drive transmission. That chain, along with some sprockets, put the finishing touches on making the paddle wheel functional as you will see in the video below.<\/span>Thank you Steve for sharing this beautiful model. We are sure others will be awe-inspired by this fantastic accomplishment.<\/span>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>

Milwaukee Road Little Joe E78<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

“This motor was involved in an accident in sixteen mile canyon in June of 1966. E78 was transferred to the Milwaukee shops in Milwaukee, WI and they used F unit cabs, grills and electronics to rebuild the motor. All Nation cabs were used to represent this locomotive after rebuilding.”\u00a0 James Schultz<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Now this photo is what we call a real stack train!\u00a0 Once again, Leon Butler’s artistic and creative character is seen in this beautiful selection and pyramid of cars.\u00a0 We see two All Nation Line ACL Whopper Hoppers supporting the stack, followed by the Southern Tobacco Box Car, the Big John Southern Hopper and to top it off the baby ACL Hopper.\u00a0 You must agree this photo has to make you smile! <\/span><\/p>\n

Michael Rahilly had a vision for re-creating one of the most beautiful engines in the NJ Transit Line. The attention to detail, the specific development of the decal and its application was a team effort led by this experienced train man. The development started with Michael\u2019s vision of what the All Nation Line 3D printed SW 1500 Switcher shell kit could become. Not only was it beautifully finished, but the intention for it to be a showcase car was most gorgeously set on the All Nation Line O Scale 2 Rail Road Bed Concrete Tie sections using Code 145 rail.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>Thank you John Konen for sharing the very nice All Nation Drop Center Flat Car photos. <\/span><\/span><\/span>John also shared a <\/span><\/span>rebuil<\/span><\/span>d<\/span><\/span> of <\/span><\/span>a 1950’s era Walthers 50′ wagon top auto boxcar using Protocraft <\/span><\/span>VGN-6 decals and accompanying information sheet for Virginian Class XA-1, Series 62000 – 62024. These were similar to PRR X-32B, N&W GSC 0.0. 239 and DTI GSC. 0.0. 252 (later purchased by N.P.). John used Tru-Color spray paint cans (limited color selection currently available) as his Scalecoat inventory shrinks. Some All Nation accessory pa<\/span>rts were used to replace damaged or missing parts.<\/span><\/span>As always, we look forward to seeing and then sharing, with the permission of the modeler, their exceptional work! \n<\/span><\/span>What a treat! Today we are sharing several unique boxcars that Leon Butler has been actively working on in his Roundhouse. What a delight to see all the photos of his models.<\/span>In the first photo, Leon used the All Nation fish belly underframe to help him model this unique Seaboard Boxcar 20053. There are two doors on one end that both slide to the right, one over the other, to allow fork lifts easier loading. This car is one of one on the SAL. They later built more of a similar design, but with a higher inside dimension. A beautiful edition to your layout indeed!<\/span>\"\"The next two photos are a real hoot; National Poultry Car 6007! This model is a chicken transport car built from an All Nation 36\u2019 wood reefer kit, with some modifications. We just love it!<\/span>\"\" \"\"The next two are well done, indeed: the Seaboard Bunk Cars F70710 and R70597. It is a good example of where All Nation was able to support a modeler who had a specific need. In this case we were able to provide the specific windows required for this model. We are so happy to help!<\/span>\"\"\"\"The final photo is another Seaboard Boxcar C70169. One can see that attention to details makes all the difference in the world. \n<\/span>We would very much like to thank Mr. Hisao Sugiyama from Tokoyo, Japan for sharing several photos of his O Scale Interurban Windsplitter. Mr Sugiyama is an excellent modeler of the American Interurban Trolleys. He has his own private O Scale railway called “Cedar Mountain Railway” based on his family name. \u00a0Sugiyama’s ‘Sugi’ means cedar and ‘yama’ means mountain in English. The body color of his Windsplitter is the color scheme of his private line.\u00a0 The detailing, including the interior with chairs, lighting and decoration, is outstanding. We are sure it is beautiful as it rides the rails of his traction layout. As always, we appreciate seeing the unique characteristics that each modeler creates when using basic kits in their scratch building. This model is stellar! They came in many variations, window placement, and door access. I honestly do not believe any two were identical. I remember seeing them in use in the early 1950\u2019s and some lasted through the Seaboard Coast Line. My version started with a vintage All Nation boxcar kit and used the windows John printed for me.\u201d<\/span>It was our pleasure to assist in your beautiful rendition! <\/span>Again, thank you for sharing! We recognize here the creative talents of Tom Lennon.\u00a0 We share his rendition of the Northern Pacific 60′ LCL Box Car in S-Scale for which he used the All Nation S Scale kit as a base.\u00a0 Tom made several additions & modifications along the way, as a good scratch builder does, and he produced a beautiful box car. \u00a0 Great job Tom and thank you for sharing the photo and the process you went through to create this fabulous finished car!<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by a kit that was put out many years ago by Red Ball, according to the documentation, the original kit was designed by Merle Rice of Wabash Valley Lines, Inc.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Northern Pacific 1920s era LCL Box Car, a re-engineered version of the original kit. The NP Car was unique due to the fact that the railroad was experimenting with a 60′ car. Right around the 1910 – 1920 period freight cars were starting to be built using steel. Previous to that time construction was of wood and cast iron. Stock cars were a good example of this transition for obvious reasons such as longer service life, less upkeep and heavier loads. While longer wood passenger coaches had truss rods, the only thing that makes this car look a little different is the fact that it looks like a stretched 40′ box car.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
