Welcome to another All Nation Line blog, Part 3 of our video series to scrounge parts for scratch building a Reading Railroad Bean Car.<\/span><\/p>\n

Previous videos, Parts 1<\/a> & Part 2<\/a>, introduced the project embarked upon to create a unique 40′ steel box in the Reading Railroad to transport beans to Hershey, PA. You can guess what those beans were used for as in candy treats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unique because this type of modified box car predates the type of covered hoppers in use today to carry such commodities as wheat, soy beans, and other grain crops. With hatch covers on the roof to load bulk beans and side doors for unloading, this model would be a good addition to anyone’s layout roster of freight cars.<\/span><\/p>\n

The following short video is a discussion about cutting the openings in the box car doors found on either side of the main middle panel door. While a manual process can be followed with some filing, we will use the correct size punch and die button to do the work for us. We hope you enjoy this series one step at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n
