Description: Railroad cars and equipment of the most unique kind are my preference for modeling in O Scale. Railroad freight car manufacturers sourced many or most of the components from other specialized companies and suppliers while doing most of the wooden construction and assembly. Just prior to the transition from wood to steel box cars, the Pere\u00a0 Marquette was one of a few railroads with this design and use of Hutchins Box Car Ends. Other freight cars also had Hutchins manufactured panel roofs of this time period. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Pere Marquette had built Automobile and Furniture box cars based on the ARA Standard XM-1 box car in 1926. Those cars had a 9’2″ interior height and 10′ door openings with 1 1\/2 Camel (wood) doors and 4 rib Hutchins ends.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, a modeler can build a pretty standard wood box car of this era for various roads using typical detail parts and have a unique car on the layout differentiated by these uncommon car ends.<\/span><\/p>\n

Very few of these box cars still exist today. However, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum has a cosmetically restored Pere Marquette in their collection of equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Below, the smaller 9′ ends were based on the original Walthers die cast part # C423. The ends appeared in 1923 produced by the Pressed Steel Car Company. Thus, the larger panel was more commonly found on the PM 40′ auto cars. These did not gain a following in box car production on the railroads. These can be found on rebuilt C&O cars most likely after the railroad mergers took place.<\/span><\/p>\n
