“The Midwestern railroads where called Granger Roads. The Granger Railroads<\/span>
\nincluded the CNW, CBQ, CRIP, MILW, CGW and MsTL. The Grange was an<\/span>
\norganization established in 1867 after the Civil War to lobby for lower rates<\/span>
\ncharged by the railroads. The Granger Roads hauled farmers harvest from the<\/span>
\nUpper Mississippi Valley to markets in Chicago and Milwaukee and beyond. A<\/span>
\ngood deal of legal or regulatory history is available about the equity or<\/span>
\ninequities between farmers and railroads. On the one hand farmers felt like the<\/span>
\ncharges for short haul cartage was making it impossible for them to stay in<\/span>
\nbusiness while on the other hand railroads had large capital investments to<\/span>
\nbuild, operate and maintain their physical plant.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this story, we are going to focus on the small community of Elizabeth, Illinois.<\/span>
\nElizabeth was a typical small town that was repeated in its characteristics and<\/span>
\npeople in like communities across the Midwest and Upper Mississippi Valley.<\/span>
\nThe small towns and villages grew up along the railroad right of ways with and<\/span>
\nas the new transportation network expanded across the nation. No matter if<\/span>
\nthe town was in Iowa or elsewhere in the grain belt, the rail network was the<\/span>
\nconnection between the big cities and the rural areas. So, if you describe one<\/span>
\ncommunity, they are not all that different in the fact that as much as the<\/span>
\npopulation centers depended on goods from rural America, small towns were<\/span>
\njust as dependent to order durable and non-durable goods to prosper, grow improve the standard of living in the country….<\/span><\/p>\n
