This was developed to accomplish 2 things. First, protecting the spur gear in this manner helps reduce any noise emanating from the the worm\/gear operation. Second, it serves as an oil lubrication reservoir for both gears and keeps the gears cleaner over time. Gears, bearings and bushings need lubrication and periodic maintenance.
