For Sale: Rock Island 160294 Double-Door Tuscan Red Automobile Box Car Kit. This is a re-release of the original craftsman kit for industrialized model railroad layouts. Auto Box Cars were and still are today crucial to the automobile manufacturing industry. In the early days of the auto industry, transport of autos and parts to and from factories enabled assembly line production of the family auto.
It should be noted that the doors are offset from center and the overall length of the car is 40 feet. Although advances in the carriage of auto parts and finished product as transported on the railroads today is plainly evident, this kit is for those modelers trying to model a period in earlier railroad history where these type of box cars were used in revenue service. The outside bracing as in the case of this kit was for adding extra strength to the wood sides and are brass ribs and diagonals in this kit. The box car ends are metal. The early predecessor to this kit was the Scale Model Railways version that is a unique model kit in and of itself. We may produce and release this kit under our Scale Model Railways brand in the future.
On the car sides are lines to guide the model builder in locating the braces. The letter on the car is from our original silk screen prints. The kit does not come with trucks. However, trucks may be purchased from our web-store. Included are the original kit instructions for assembly.
