For Sale: NW2 Directional Light Kit PN#513ANK
In the past, the All Nation NW2 switchers came with headlight and backlight bulbs. And if wired with diodes to manage the direction of the lights, they utilized current ahead of and on top of what the motor requires.
Therefore, if you go with LEDs, you can simply wire an LED with a 1000Ohm (1K Ohm) resistor in series, and connect the LED plus the Resistor “chain” in Parallel with the motor. The advantage are less components, less heat, and the LED automatically provides the “directionality”, if the headlight is ON when the loco is traveling backwards, simply flip the LED connections “the other way round” to facilitate the light coming on when the engine moves in the forward direction. Note, there will be no change in the starting voltage behaviour of the motor. A visible more-reliable and consistent-appearance of the light source is the result.
This kit comes with a perfboard for the front and back end of the engine body. Two 5mm White LEDs and the appropriate form factor for mounting to the inside from of the radiator engine shell and the upper ceiling location in the cab. The perfboard can be cut down to size and affixed to the forms as well as the LED with a little CA. Included is a 4 pin male-female connector for easy disconnect of the circuit. Soldering will be required of this kit and careful management of wire lengths. Testing will also be required to make sure polarities are in the correct direction. This is a fun project with great results.
