Another in our series of kits designed for the entry level or beginner modeler. The basic kit contains the primary superstructure parts to build up the body. A great starting point for later adding super details that can be a follow on purchase of one of our detail kits for caboose models followed by trucks and couplers if desired. Two Options are available, the basic kit or the comprehensive kit with detail parts sourced that includes everything for a complete model build out (see parts list below).

The ACL Caboose Class M3 were wood cabooses used on Southern railroads, similar ones were on the Southern Railroad and SCL. However, they differ from their Midwest and Western counterparts because these series were built by the ACL shops. Consequently, materials used sometimes were whatever was available such as yellow pine for running boards or mulehide or tin sheets on the roof rather than hard neponset. With that in mind, the modeler can take initiatives to innovate and mix materials such as an overlay skin on the roof or wood sheath on the underside of the roof overhangs.

The parts are printed in PLA, ABS and Flex filaments where we determined the best application for the part. Some cleanup of build plate support material or brims may be required.  CA or E6000 type glues work well for assembly. Floors and roofs are solid ABS and can be drilled and tapped if needed for example using a machine screw as a king pin to attach trucks through the floor.

Keep in mind to think through the order of assembly process in construction. The car side might be painted or weathered before assembly. An added feature in this kit is how the windows are installed. On the top edge of the car sides and the front and back cupola sides are slots for inserting the acetate windows and then the window frames snap into place. But insertion must be done after painting but before gluing ups the sides. These slots might need to be cleared with a thin piece of shim or sheet metal to make sure the acetate slides in easily. This feature eliminates the need to glue in the windows.

The exterior tool box comes in 5 printed parts. The back of the box, the top block, the front face of the box (access panel) hinged (3D printed using Flex filament to simulate flexion of the door), 1 front iron strap support and 1 rear support.
