For Sale: F3/F7 Diesel Power Truck Part #1013 bearing replacements 8/pkg. Our original bearings were bronze and required significant machining. Our replacement for the bronze bearing is a significant improvement using Polytetrafluoroethylene. The bearing has a Coefficient of Friction of 0.05–0.10, which is the third-lowest of any known solid material. This means the modeler will never have to lubricate this bearing. It has such a low coefficient of friction because it exhibits limited intermolecular reactions with contacting materials so the less resistance, the less power is required to run your engines and likely easier to start that 100 ton freight train with better control as well.
How tough is this material? It has a Rockwell hardness (Shore D): 50 to 65. It has excellent chemical resistance and water absorption is zero. Other safety properties, Polytetrafluoroethylene is stable and nontoxic at lower temperatures, it begins to deteriorate at temperatures of about 260 °C (500 °F).
Modelers knowledgeable about the All Nation F unit truck side frames know the bronze bearings were inserted into the journals and the ends of the All Nation axles road on the bronze bearing surface for a smooth ride. Being a spherical type bushing with a flat side, the bearing did not turn in the journal yet floated for a flexible truck application. Our new bearings are of the same metrics as the bronze ones we made in the past. Given they are also spherical and very slippery, they will serve the same function and purpose as the bronze. These new bearings literally snap with a little pressure into the truck side frame journals and are unlikely to fall out as the bronze bearings did when disassembling the truck for servicing. However, they are just as easily lost on the floor if one is not very careful in taking care not to drop them. These bearings are what allows the engines to track well during operation.
