If you are old enough in the hobby and go way back in time, many O Scale layouts ran with AC motors and picked up current via an outside 3rd rail. That is until DC came along and the 2 rails carried the current around the layout. The 3rd rail usually mounted on what were called chair rails that would have been the structure that the elevated rail mounted to on a layout slightly higher than the track rail head. This was not accurate prototypical for steam, however other transportation systems did use 3 rail current pick up such as the CA&E, the El in the Chicago Loop, Interurban commuter trains or when traction was not running off overhead wire, the Skokie Swift comes to mind. Thus, this brass pick-up shoe was in the early All Nation Catalogs for modelers to implement on their equipment.
