The Great Western Granger Story is a narrative reference book about a time long ago that helps us understand a plethora of challenges of a time gone by.

Encompassing 100 pages with detailed information and photos on a world truly of the past, we know you will enjoy this story that is near and dear to the heart of my family.  We know model railroaders and all will enjoy a part of history which many may not know.

Sincerely, John Wubbel

Excerpt from this book:

“The Midwestern railroads where called Granger Roads. The Granger Railroads
included the CNW, CBQ, CRIP, MILW, CGW and MsTL. The Grange was an
organization established in 1867 after the Civil War to lobby for lower rates
charged by the railroads. The Granger Roads hauled farmers harvest from the
Upper Mississippi Valley to markets in Chicago and Milwaukee and beyond. A
good deal of legal or regulatory history is available about the equity or
inequities between farmers and railroads. On the one hand farmers felt like the
charges for short haul cartage was making it impossible for them to stay in
business while on the other hand railroads had large capital investments to
build, operate and maintain their physical plant.

In this story, we are going to focus on the small community of Elizabeth, Illinois.
Elizabeth was a typical small town that was repeated in its characteristics and
people in like communities across the Midwest and Upper Mississippi Valley.
The small towns and villages grew up along the railroad right of ways with and
as the new transportation network expanded across the nation. No matter if
the town was in Iowa or elsewhere in the grain belt, the rail network was the
connection between the big cities and the rural areas. So, if you describe one
community, they are not all that different in the fact that as much as the
population centers depended on goods from rural America, small towns were
just as dependent to order durable and non-durable goods to prosper, grow improve the standard of living in the country….

On this part #, 1 large pdf file will require software to view the book. There are a number of highly enhanced photos from our collection of negatives, photos and postcards.   We created them in high resolution  utilizing Artificial Intelligence methods to improve the resolution, crispness, symmetry, complexity, contrast, curvature, color, and lines to influence aesthetic experiences when viewing. Therefore, we recommend viewing on a computer system with a high resolution graphics adapter card and large screen and use the ability to zoom-in on the graphics. Because some of these embedded images are so large, they may take some time to fully load or load as you page through the document.
