Trailer Bridge (for TOFC trailers)
- Purpose: Carries full-size highway trailers (semi-trailers)
- Structure:
- Flat deck with hitches to lock trailer kingpins
- May include bridge plates between cars for drive-on loading
- Weight capacity: Higher — designed to support 30–40+ ton trailers
- Loading method: Trailers are driven or lifted onto flatcars
The key difference between a car bridge and a trailer bridge on a flatcar is what they’re designed to carry — even though they may be the same size. A car bridge is optimized for lighter passenger vehicles, while a trailer bridge is built to handle heavier highway trailers used in TOFC (Trailer-on-Flat-Car) service.
