For Sale: 1 Waffle Box Car Kit with trucks.

For the entry level 2 rail O Scale model railroader, Conductor Railway Hobbies is putting Modeling back into Model Railroading with this “Waffle Side” Box Car kit. The Waffle originally introduced and sold by Walthers as produced by another manufacturer (CMMC) and was a unique piece both visually and mechanically. Few if any manufacturers today release new kits which is a huge fun part of building a model railroad empire. While the Walthers kits are rare, it was an inspiration to develop a better kit using today’s technology. If you are tired of Ready-To-Run models and want to easily elevate your skills, satisfaction and enjoyment, then this kit is for you. This box car kit is not a true replica of the original Walthers kit. In fact many model manufacturers have put out Waffle Box Car in most of the scales. The inspiration for this kit comes from the prototype with the precision and detail a 3D Printer achieved in the scale of 1:48 and hopefully a vast improvement over previous models that were put out in hobby stores in the past. As of January 2021 we have been able to significantly improve the appearance in the print with very smooth sides and components. The first photo illustrates the diagonal lines that a nozzle print head typically does both on the car sides and door panel. This is no longer the case with Prusa Research technology the sides are now smooth in comparison as one would expect with steel sheathing.

A feature few knew about in the original Walthers model was the working draft gear as it was simulated with hidden springs in the center sill. In the real operational mode of the model in starting forward or backward, switching or otherwise, the same can be had as the prototype when pulling the slack out of a consist of cars, a realistic action. The shock absorbing mechanical on railroad cars saved the day for coupler and draw bar maintenance or failures. The purpose of the waffle is not simply for looks, it strengthens the sheathing on the box car. The Waffles contain bars or posts for wrapping load restraining straps. One might notice the waffles are at different heights for restraining loads, depending on the freight car builder’s design.

Easy to build yet challenging the imagination. Most all the parts are 3D printed with PLA filament on a Prusa machine and may come in different colors. A variety of railroads had these box cars like the Illinois Central in Gray or Orange, Chicago North Western or Green Bay and Western. Shown here are parts, various stages of assembly and a photo of the original Walther’s model of mine which by the way is not for sale. The release of this kit comes with Kadee 743 couplers, All Nation trucks and 4 inside car detail panels with steel nailable floor skin. Assembly instructions, parts list and guidance are available on my web site. Competitively priced against comparable N, HO Scale models on the market, caution as you might get hooked on O Scale for the detail and realism. A web URL for assembly instructions will be included in the box with the parts.

A “Build Along” of a Waffle Side boxcar, with exceptional modeler Dave Schultz via New Tracks led by Jim Kellow, was held in November / December 2021.

The comprehensive kit comes with several different roofing profiles for the model builder to work with, interior wall and floor details for removable roofs, a pair of trucks and enhanced roofing profile options unlike our lower cost basic kit.

Sold as is straight off the Prusa Printer built plate, all sales final no returns. PLA is not dishwasher safe and may deform in a hot automobile in the summer time as it has a relatively low glass-transition temperature.
