For Sale:  All Nation NYC “Riders Car” Basic Beginners KIT 3D Printed O Scale (Minus Trucks) PN#408ANK

Based on our deep collection of reference models from days of old, the New York Central “Riders Car” is a unique piece that will be cherished for years to come by almost any modeler with minimal model building skills. It is a great kit to learn and is minimalistic in the sense that it does not have the particulars of a cupola to integrate on the roof. The NYC Car falls into the category of Drover Cabooses that railroads used in the days of transporting livestock to market. By law, shipping farm animals required rest, feed and watering, thus the men had to accompany the herds to market and were accommodated by the railroads to ride in the Caboose, a Drover or in this case the “Riders Car”.

The unusual aspect of these cars was the fact that they were longer than the normal caboose used by conductors and brake men on the end of freight trains. Not only did the Drover Cars serve the railroad crew, they usually had seating for the cattlemen and sometimes baggage space. Of course the car this kit represents was unique to the NYC. Although, variations such as those found on the Chicago & North Western had the same profile with the only other major difference being the number and placement of windows. The Chicago Great Western and other roads such as the Cotton Belt Route had Drover Cabooses, however they sported a cupola on the roof.

Further information on the NYC can be found on the New York Central Historical Society https://nycshs.org/

Instructions:

To start you off on the assembly process of this kit, the 2 piece roof and 2 piece floor prints can be placed on parchment paper on a flat piece of glass and joined with J B Weld Kwik for a steel strong joint. If the roof seam is apparent upon joining the 2 sections, additional J B Kwik can be applied, allowed to harden and then sand the car body like one would do on an automobile so that it feathers nicely and disappears altogether.

Next, the Car Ends can be cemented to the roof followed by gluing the floor making sure everything at this point is square.

While every modeler has their preference on how to put a kit together even if one has exacting step by step instructions, this is the point where thinking through the next process steps is a good idea. There are car length stringer spacers available to support the roof between the ends but also for gluing up the sides. However, if one desires to do an interior then the roof may not be permanently glued to the body but rest on top.

Priming and painting is another step to think about before gluing the sides and installing windows. Drilling and tapping may also be appropriate at this time to attach the bolsters and make a decision about the truck king pins to be used.  This decision may depend on the type and make of truck that will go under the car. The following video may help regarding the thought processes to build out Riders Car.
