The easiest 3 rail to 2 rail conversion is to build out the engine without power i.e., a dummy locomotive. Assuming you have an MTH GP30 engine shell, this kit provides the front and rear platforms, a generic motor bridge sections and 4 4-40 x 5/16″ flat head screws to assemble the chassis and a 1500 Gallon fuel tank using the longer 4 4-40 x 3/8″ screws. The fuel tank pilot holes should be drill with a #43 and tapped. Once assembled the chassis can be fitted to the body using the existing mounting screw holes on the ends. Depending on the condition of the original body mounting holes, these may need to be re-tapped for a metric screw or a 5-40 flat head usually 3/8″ long. The head of the screw must be clear of the top sides of the truck side frames. Mount the platforms to the chassis bridge sections followed by mounting the fuel tank. Pay particular attention to which is the front end and the back end. Parts can be laid out on the bench in advance.

Please note my test track bench work amplifies the sound to a huge extent because it act like a sound board, no homasote or cork has been used to make it quiet and my track work has been deliberately laid down to be rough in order to determine engine and car performance at various speeds.
Pilots and couplers do not come with this kit. If a motor installation is desired sometime later, we might be able to help to accommodate various motor sizes with a reprint of the bridge for custom mounting purposes.
