This kit includes all the items you will need to build out a nice looking fish belly flat car. This particular model has a history going back to Megow’s Models around 1936 – 1938 when the original drawings were done by Fred C Tuxworth. Later on Megow became Scale Model Railways and Fred’s drawings were adapted and later used by All-Nation Line. These flat cars were some of the early castings and it should be noted the center sill had the same profile as the sides, thus the term fishbelly. These drawings, Megow and Scale Model Railways can be found on our site in the “Cool Things” section.
At the time of introducing this model to the O Scale model railroader community, railroads such as the L & N Series 24300 – 24799 and the C & NW Series 42501 – 42699 were in service.
While All-Nation owns the Scale Model Railways brand, this flat car appeared again in our old infamous catalogs as a straight side flat car whereby the casting changed slightly to include the car sides cast as one piece where previously the sides came separately and had to be attached. This was common practice because even the Scale Craft 46′ flat car drawn in 1936 had assembly instructions illustrating how to mount the sides to the car body.
The casting were done by Adams even back when this car first came on the market. However, when All-Nation brought it back out, it was updated and cast as one-piece aluminum and of course the instructions also were redrawn by R. J. Bozak for the company. This is a lovely car because of its weight and pretty good detail for a sand casting.
Consequently, this kit ships with the original straight side casting. We include links to the original Bozak drawing that we updated with a new photo of the model in the old drawing showing our 3D Printed fishbelly sides representative of the Megow/Scale Model Railways original. This casting is the straight sides and any appearance of a fishbelly would be the center sill running the length of the car.
